Parasite Prevention

Pet Parasite Prevention

When it comes to pet parasite prevention, our veterinary clinic can help! Parasites are organisms that feed on or within other animals, such as fleas and ticks. Although these are two of the most common, there are many more organisms that can be detrimental to your pet's health. Other common parasites include mites, lice, heartworms, intestinal parasites, and more.

Parasite harm can range from minor irritation to serious conditions that, if untreated, can be fatal. Some of these parasites can even be harmful to humans which is why it is important that all of your bases are covered when it comes to parasite prevention.

At University Animal Hospital, our veterinarians and staff strongly recommend that your pets (including strictly indoor cats) stay on flea, tick, and heartworm preventive all year round. We strive to keep your pet healthy by preventing heartworm disease, tickborne diseases, and a variety of other infections with regular pet parasite prevention.

Internal Parasites & Pet Parasite Prevention

Our animal hospital can assist with internal parasites in addition to external parasites. Internal parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. These parasites get into a pet’s intestinal tract and cause discomfort. Not only that, but they will steal away vital nutrients which can affect their growth and development. Internal parasites can become life-threatening as they can shut down major body systems. Common signs of internal parasites include diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, vomiting, lethargy, blood in stool, pot-bellied appearance, and more.

Both internal and external parasites are avoidable by practicing good hygiene and administering monthly preventive medication. Other ways to prevent parasites include:

  • Schedule regular grooming
  • Check for fleas/ticks
  • Clean up feces (eggs/larvae might be hiding in them)
  • Avoid raw food diets
  • Routine pet wellness exams
  • Topical medicine or monthly ingestible preventatives
